Whilst delivering his concession speech yesterday a senior member of Romney’s campaign staff was overheard saying that Romney was stepping down after agreeing with McCain to do so in return for being McCain’s running mate.  How much truth was there in the statement?  Who knows.  But it certainly makes a lot of sense.
